Alongside heating efficiency, cost is one of the most common factors that comes up during conversations about ground source heat pumps.  Drilling boreholes is perhaps one of the most substantial logistical and financial factors in these projects, and it has a big impact on the overall cost of installation.  Below, we outline the costs associated… Continue reading How much does a ground source heat pump borehole cost?

Most people who are considering investing in a ground source heat pump will end up doing a lot of research on the topic. It’s a considerable project to invest in, especially compared to a more standard gas boiler, and you need to know what you’re getting into.  One of the most significant parts of these… Continue reading How many boreholes does a ground source heat pump need?

As you start to investigate the world of ground source heat pumps, you’ll likely find that there are all sorts of decisions you’ll need to make about what your systems will look like.  One of those can be choosing between whether to use an open-loop or a closed-loop system. Below, we briefly outline what each… Continue reading Choosing between open-loop vs closed-loop ground source systems

With heat pumps, efficiency is perhaps the number one issue to focus on. The whole point of these heating solutions is to maximise the ratio of heat released to energy put in, to make the most of both their environmental and cost-reduction benefits.  Below, we outline some of the main design factors that impact how… Continue reading How borehole design affects heat pump efficiency

As you start to research geothermal energy and heating solutions, one of the concepts you’ll come across is closed-loop geothermal drilling.  Groundsource energy systems, including heat pumps, rely on transferring heat up from the ground below through closed-loop pipe systems, and this is generally why geothermal drilling projects are carried out.  Below, we go into… Continue reading What is closed loop geothermal drilling?

When setting up a geothermal energy system, one of the biggest logistical hurdles will be drilling a geothermal borehole. The ground conditions that this hole will be drilled in can play a big role in a number of factors, from how the hole needs to be drilled to how deep it needs to be, and… Continue reading What role do ground conditions play in a geothermal drilling project?

With global warming rearing its ugly head and geopolitical tensions contributing to substantial fluctuations in the costs of hydrocarbon energy sources, a lot of people are looking for more affordable, sustainable heating alternatives to conventional gas boilers.  One of the most popular solutions that has emerged is geothermal heating systems, but how exactly do they… Continue reading How does geothermal heating work?

One of the main things that people struggle with when considering a geothermal energy solution is how substantial an investment it is to have geothermal boreholes drilled.  As a result, if there’s any chance that existing infrastructure could be adapted to fulfil that same function, it’s an opportunity well worth looking into.  Below, we investigate… Continue reading Can you convert an existing water borehole to geothermal?

An often-touted benefit of geothermal energy solutions is their longevity. Installed properly, the boreholes themselves can last for up to a century, but that is dependent on some regular maintenance.  Below, we outline some of the main parts of the borehole that require maintenance attention. From the borehole itself to heat pumps and other parts… Continue reading How are geothermal boreholes maintained?

You’ll likely have noticed, walking around on a frosty winter morning, that soil can become much harder during the cold winter months. While it might be intuitive to think that this would limit geothermal drilling, in the UK at least, it has limited impact on the drilling itself.  Below, we’ll go through some of the… Continue reading Can Geothermal Drilling Be Done in Winter?

With most projects that require drilling geothermal or water boreholes, one of the most important logistical considerations of these projects is how to get all of the necessary equipment to the site in question.  It’s not overly complicated, but having a rough idea of what’s involved can make it easier to put some basic plans… Continue reading What Access Does a Drilling Rig Need?

For those considering investing in some kind of geothermal heating solution, one of the main barriers is often the cost of having a borehole drilled. It can be a substantial investment, but thanks to the cost-saving benefits of heat pumps, it’s one that will typically pay for itself relatively quickly. How much it actually ends… Continue reading What Affects The Cost of Drilling a Geothermal Borehole?

In recent years, geothermal borehole drilling has become an increasingly common requirement in both domestic and commercial-scale projects. With ground source heat pumps in particular, these infrastructural investments can feel quite substantial, and a lot of people will have a few questions about how things are expected to go.  Here, we take a look at… Continue reading How deep does geothermal borehole drilling go?

Before a drilling rig can be brought on site to start making a geothermal borehole, a whole bunch of planning needs to take place. A big part of this consists of working out where the borehole site itself needs to be situated, and there are a number of important steps to this process.  Below, we… Continue reading How does the geothermal drilling site selection process work?

Geothermal energy has become an increasingly dominant energy solution in recent years. In a context where we are faced with spiralling gas prices and a prerogative to reduce carbon emissions, these highly efficient ways of producing heat energy for both domestic and commercial properties are simply too good to overlook.  Drilling lies at the logistical… Continue reading How is geothermal drilling technology evolving in 2026?

Over the past few years, there has been immense volatility in the energy market. Primarily driven by two substantial conflicts, the result has been immense rises in both oil and gas prices, with huge knock-on effects to businesses and consumers.  Combined with the ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and, more generally, clean up energy… Continue reading What are the advantages of geothermal drilling?
