What equipment is used in geothermal drilling?

Geothermal drilling is a common process required for a range of projects, often necessary to install systems such as ground source heat pumps. 

As ground source heat pumps have become increasingly popular in this country, the need for geothermal drilling services has also increased, but how do these processes actually work?

In this article, we focus on one aspect in particular – the equipment that’s normally used to drill boreholes for domestic and industrial purposes. 

Drilling rig

The drilling rig itself is the most important piece of equipment needed to complete a geothermal drilling project. These rigs have to be capable of supporting sometimes hundreds of meters of heavy drill bits and of rotating them as they drill hundreds of metres into the earth.

The drill bits themselves need to be able to withstand high temperatures and massive rotational force – as do the drill pipes and joints. Highly trained teams of technicians are needed to operate these drill rigs, and deal with any issues that might emerge.

Special directional drilling tools will sometimes also be necessary, to navigate fractures and follow geological weaknesses. 

Drilling fluid systems

Drilling teams also need to have a system in place that can remove all of the cuttings and muck that results from the drilling process, and maintain the drill bit at an acceptable operating temperature.

This is often done using a drilling mud circulation system, which pumps fluid down to both cool down the bit as it heats up from the friction of drilling, and then also transports the cuttings up to the surface. 

Casing 

As the hole is being drilled, the drilling technicians will need to make sure that it remains stable and doesn’t fill in on itself. A range of different casings might be used, to make sure that it doesn’t break down as the hole gains depth.

These casings are particularly important for the first few metres of the borehole, where the ground will be particularly unstable. Further down, as the drilling rig starts to go through rock and other more stable materials, it becomes less important.

Data logging equipment

Geothermal drilling projects aren’t just carried out blindly. The drilling team use a range of sensors and data logging equipment to measure the temperatures of the borehole, pressure, and potential fluids or gases that might be hit during the drilling process. 

These tools also allow the drilling team to remain aware of what material it is that’s being drilled through, allowing for drill bit changes or other operational alterations to be made as necessary. 

Real-time logging ensures that both the drilling process itself is maximally efficient and that the resultant fluid transfer loop targets the optimal pathway for energy transfer to occur.

Geothermal drilling companies will decide what equipment is needed for a specific drilling project, a decision that will be made based on the findings of initial geological surveys. It’s important to have these surveys carried out by an experienced provider – potentially by the drilling company itself – to ensure that the drilling process is as efficient and safe as possible.
